Unalome Chronicles: Katelyn MacMullen, Actor

Katey first began acting and modeling as a kid to help her come out of her shell, which ended up becoming something she really loved to do. Now, with a role on the ABC show, General Hospital, she get's to call her favorite hobby her career. Goals! Let's get to know her better...

Tell us about your journey becoming an actor and about how you got to where you are today, with a role on General Hospital.
"My journey as an actor started when I was really young. I was born in Los Angeles and I modeled and acted until I was about twelve years old. My mom told me that, when I was really young, I refused to talk to anyone and hid behind her leg anytime someone would look at me... So, she’s the one who got me into acting and it brought me out of my shell. My family and I moved to Reno when I was thirteen or so, so I stopped acting. I became disinterested in my college courses after the first year, because there was always a part of me that wanted to get back into acting. So, when I was 18, I decided to move back out to LA to pursue acting as a career. I’m really grateful to be where I am now. What I love most about acting is that it allows me to have a deeper understanding of people, which in turn, makes me a better friend, daughter, etc. I don’t know what’s next for me, but I’m excited for the future and whatever comes my way.

Acting is a creatively intense and is a hard career to feel secure in. Do you have any methods that that keep you focused?
I try to stay motivated and grounded by being active, eating healthy, and staying in acting school, so that I can continue to feel inspired. Acting can be emotionally draining for me, so I make sure that I rest when I need to.

Do you have any hobbies outside of acting?
Yes! A few...Reading – plays, mostly. Partly, because we have to for school, but I actually do really enjoy reading them. Right now, I’m reading Really Really, by Paul Downs Colaizzo and Spoon River Anthology (a book of poems), by Edgar Lee Masters. I also enjoy cooking, or I should say learning how to cook, because I’m not too great at it yet! I also really enjoy hiking and camping. The hike spot, Fryman, in Studio City, is one of my favorites.

What motivates you?
Being around my friends and my family motivates me the most. I have a pretty great support system and everyone that’s in it pushes me to be better and stronger.

Is there a great phrase or motto you live your life by?
One of my teachers once said to me, “My sense of humor saved my life.” Life can be unpredictable and I think it’s important to find humor in the craziness of it all when you can.

When do you feel the most alive?
I feel the most alive when I travel! Unfortunately, I’ve never been outside of the country (definitely plan on changing that) but, recently, I took a trip up to Big Sur with some friends and it was amazing. We got to leave the city and our crazy lives for a while, to just have fun and spend time away from our phones.

How do you define success?
Success to me is having the opportunity to do what you genuinely love every day. It’s a big question, but that’s the first thing that comes to my mind!
